Lanyards are an essential piece of safety equipment to be used as a part of an effective fall arrest system. Lanyards attach the harness the worker is wearing to an anchor. Lanyards come in many different styles, lengths and functionality. The application the lanyard will be used will determine the type of lanyard to be used. Lanyards may be constructed of polyester nylon webbing or rope or coated steel cables. The nylon may also be coated with Kevlar or other materials to increase strength or abrasion resistance. Nylon webbing is chemical resistant, however there are different levels of chemical resistance depending on the nylon. Nylon lanyards also provide excellent abrasion resistance. Some lanyards offer individual serial numbers for each individual lanyard for tracking and record keeping. Lanyards can be positioning lanyards, shock absorbing lanyards, fall arrest lanyards or retractable lanyards. Retractable lanyards are often times preferred because they help to avoid tripping hazards by the lanyard itself. Most lanyards are equipped with double locking snap hooks. Some lanyards are available with a second, third or fourth leg for added protection and guaranteeing a specific fall position in the event of a fall.
Lanyards must be used with other safety equipment to provide the full protection they offer. Lanyards are one of the 3 components required in a functional fall arrest system and should always be used with an anchorage connector and correct body wear, for example a full body harness. A lanyard cannot provide protection just on its own. Some lanyards have sealed spring mechanisms inside, some offer energy absorbing braking systems. If a lanyard has been involved in fall, it must be removed from service because the integrity of the lanyard has been compromised and it no longer offers the strength of it's original form. Some lanyards offer a warning indicator to alert that the lanyard has been involved in an accident or fall so that it can removed from service and replaced with a new unused lanyard. Different lanyards offer different protection, determine the application the lanyard will be used for in order to determine the best lanyard and fall equipment for the individual application. The worker should always feel confident they are wearing the best gear for their safety, so fall protection training awareness is also recommended to add to their equipment confidence and knowledge.
